The requirement for hot food "on the go" is not a modern phenomenon. As early as the First World War the necessity to provide troops in the trenches with a hot meal was addressed by the provision of the "Little Kitchener", which was essentially no more than a tin of boot polish with a flimsy grid-iron to rest a Billy can on. The soldier simple lit the contents of the tin, which would then burn much like a modern fire lighter.
